Trump Insists He’s Serious About Seeking Third Term, Despite Constitutional Barriers

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has firmly stated that he is “not joking” about the possibility of seeking a third term in office, despite the constitutional limitations that prohibit it.

In an interview on Sunday, Trump addressed growing speculation about his potential return to the presidency beyond the two-term limit set by the U.S. Constitution. When questioned about his comments on a third term, Trump responded emphatically, saying, “No, I’m not joking. I’m not joking,” but quickly added, “It is far too early to think about it.”

The 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, ratified in 1951, limits presidents to two terms in office, whether consecutive or not. The amendment states, “No person shall be elected to the office of the president more than twice.” However, Trump hinted at the possibility of finding alternative legal or political paths to circumvent this restriction, though he did not elaborate on what those avenues might entail.

Trump’s comments came after he was asked about a scenario in which his running mate, Vice President JD Vance, could potentially assume the presidency before stepping aside to allow Trump to take over. Trump acknowledged that this was one approach but suggested that there were other possibilities as well.

While Trump’s remarks have sparked curiosity and controversy, his plans for the future remain unclear, with the legal and political implications of seeking a third term bound to be a major issue.
