Trump Signs Executive Order to Enhance IVF Affordability in U.S.
U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to develop policy recommendations to expand access to and affordability of in vitro fertilization.
The order directs the assistant to the president for domestic policy to submit policy recommendations within 90 days to ensure broader access to IVF and to significantly lower both out-of-pocket and insurance plan costs.
The executive order emphasizes the administration’s commitment to easing regulatory and statutory barriers in order to make IVF treatment more affordable.
Speaking at Mar-a-Lago, where cameras did not capture the signing, Trump noted that the policy would be appreciated by women and families.
He had previously referred to himself as the “father of IVF” during an October Fox News town hall with an all-female audience. At a Michigan rally in August, Trump had pledged that under his administration, either the government or insurance companies would be required to cover the full cost of IVF treatments, although the details on funding were not provided.
Trump’s stance on IVF has gained attention, particularly after the Alabama Supreme Court’s 2024 decision to classify frozen embryos as children, which raised concerns about potential legal implications for IVF treatments.
Following the ruling, Trump distanced himself from it, voicing strong support for IVF access and urging Alabama lawmakers to address the issue swiftly.
Despite Trump’s promises to increase IVF accessibility, Republicans in Congress have been reluctant to guarantee nationwide access to IVF.
In June, Senate Republicans blocked a Democratic bill aimed at ensuring nationwide IVF access, arguing that the legislation was unnecessary and politically motivated.
Republican lawmakers also introduced their own IVF and contraception-related bills, but none have passed.
