During the commemoration of the 2024 Workers’ Day in Abuja, Festus Osifo, President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), voiced strong opposition against the exorbitant electricity tariffs imposed on Nigerians.
Osifo’s remarks came amidst growing concerns over the recent tariff hike approved by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
In his address to the gathering, Osifo criticized the ethical implications of subjecting citizens to high electricity tariffs, labeling it as unjustifiable.
He called upon NERC to swiftly reverse the tariff increase within one week, citing the detrimental impact on consumers already grappling with inconsistent power supply.
Highlighting the critical role of power in driving economic growth, Osifo emphasized the indispensability of energy resources such as oil and gas.
He underscored the need for effective management of the power sector for the collective welfare of Nigerian citizens, lamenting the persistent challenges despite privatization efforts over a decade ago.
Osifo denounced the practice of estimated billing, describing it as extortion and robbery against Nigerian consumers.
He urged regulatory authorities to address the underlying issues contributing to the sector’s inefficiencies and ensure fair and affordable electricity tariffs for all.
