A devastating tanker explosion on the Otedola Bridge in Lagos on Tuesday claimed the lives of two individuals and left three others injured. The tanker, which was loaded with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also known as petrol, exploded in a fiery blaze that prompted panic among motorists and residents, forcing many to scramble for safety.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the tragic incident, revealing that the fire destroyed 12 vehicles, eight tricycles, and one building. LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, stated that the three injured victims were promptly rushed to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.
Oke-Osanyintolu also confirmed that the agency’s Tiger Response Team was quickly deployed to the scene to control the fire and mitigate further damage. “The road has been cordoned off,” he said, advising motorists to use alternative routes.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) also issued a statement acknowledging the explosion. In its post on X, LASTMA revealed that the fire spread to nearby structures, including a church, a residential building, and mechanics’ parks located under the Otedola Bridge, near CMD Road. Emergency responders were on the ground, working tirelessly to extinguish the flames and secure the area.
“A tanker has fallen and caught fire, affecting nearby structures, including a church, residential house, and mechanics’ parks,” LASTMA’s statement read. The agency also reported that the fire has resulted in a complete blockade of the area, causing a severe traffic standstill in the vicinity.
Despite multiple warnings and roadblocks, some motorists have continued to make reckless attempts to drive through the affected area, putting themselves and others at great risk. LASTMA condemned this hazardous behavior, urging drivers to avoid the area and follow the advice of emergency personnel.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service also confirmed their involvement, stating they responded to the fire at around 8:00 PM. According to their statement, the tanker involved was a 30-tonne DAF Gas Truck, though the registration number remains unknown.
Recovery operations continue as authorities work to manage the aftermath of this tragic accident.
