Two individuals have reportedly drowned in a boat accident in the Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State, located in the Ogun West senatorial district.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident in a statement issued from Abeokuta, the state capital.
Odutola said “On September 12, 2024, at around 7:00 a.m., we received a report of a tragic event at the Ipokia Division. Two individuals, Awhanse Jimoh and Ahohe Jimoh from Ilepa Village in Ipokia, informed the Divisional Police Officer about the incident involving two wood merchants who were swept into a river.”
She explained that Ahohe Seido and an individual known only by the alias Dogbon were transporting firewood along the Gbodo Jego River in Ijofin, Ipokia, Ogun State, en route to Benin Republic for sale when the accident occurred. A sudden strong current caused their boat to capsize, leading to all onboard falling into the water. Despite rescue attempts, only two of the individuals were rescued and brought to the riverbank.
Unfortunately, Ahohe Seido and Dogbon did not survive. Extensive search efforts by divers have thus far been unsuccessful in locating their bodies. Community divers are continuing search and rescue operations to find the missing individuals. An investigation is also underway to confirm the details of the accident and verify the statements from the survivors.
