Sports Minister John Enoh of Nigeria congratulated the Flamingos on their 1-0 victory over the Dominican Republic.
The hard-fought victory over the hosts finished the Flamingos’ 2024 FIFA U-17 women’s World Cup Group A campaign.
Shakirat Moshood scored a long-range goal in the 89th minute to give her team the victory, continuing her outstanding play.
Moshood has now scored four goals in three games in the group stage and is currently the top scorer in the ongoing tournament
The win means Flamingos top the group on nine points and qualified for the quarter-finals alongside Ecuador, who thrashed New Zealand 4-0.
Reacting to the win, Enoh wrote on X: “Congratulations to Nigeria’s U17 Women’s Team for their impressive victory over the Dominican Republic at the ongoing FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup. The Flamingos secured a hard-fought 1-0 win, showcasing their determination and skill on the global stage. Finishing their group with maximum points, the Flamingos had to battle hard for the win, and Shakirat Moshood’s long range strike made the difference, netting a goal in the 88th minute.”
The Flamingos will now take on the United States in the quarter-finals on Saturday, October 26.
The Americans finished second in Group B behind Spain after securing two wins and one defeat.
