UN Deputy Secretary-General Seeks Nigerian Support for SDG 16 Implementation

Amina Mohammed, the UN Deputy Secretary-General, has urged the Nigerian government’s support for the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Goal 16, focusing on promoting peace and inclusive institutions.

During a visit to the UN headquarters in New York, Mohammed solicited assistance from the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Adamu Lamuwa, and the Permanent Secretary of the Career Management Office (CMO) at the Head of Service, Dr. Marcus Ogunbiyi.

Highlighting the importance of capacity building, Mohammed emphasized the need to strengthen institutions to facilitate the achievement of development goals.

She acknowledged Nigeria’s leadership role within the African group, particularly in advocating for an equitable and fair international tax system aligned with the SDGs.

Notably, Nigeria and the African Group recently called for member states’ support to adopt a resolution on “Promotion of Inclusive and Effective International Tax Cooperation at the United Nations.”

During the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Nigeria presented a historic resolution, laying the groundwork for a new universal system of international tax cooperation.

This initiative, proposed on behalf of the 54-member African Group of States, was adopted by consensus, marking a significant step toward a convention on tax cooperation and annual discussions on global tax issues.

Amina Mohammed also commended the role played by Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Amb. Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, in advancing the tax resolution.
