UN Secretary-General António Guterres Sends Ramadan Wishes and Calls for Peace and Unity

As Muslims around the world begin observing the Holy Month of Ramadan, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has shared a heartfelt message wishing peace, unity, and compassion to those observing the sacred month.

In a video message released on Friday, Guterres expressed his warmest wishes to Muslims globally, reflecting on the core values of Ramadan compassion, empathy, and generosity. He emphasized that Ramadan is a time for spiritual reflection, reconnection with family and community, and remembering the less fortunate.

“Ramadan embodies the values of compassion, empathy, and generosity. It is an opportunity to reconnect with family and community and to remember those who are less fortunate,” Guterres said.

The Secretary-General also dedicated a special part of his message to those enduring hardship due to displacement and violence, such as in regions like Gaza, Sudan, the Sahel, and other conflict-affected areas. He extended his unwavering solidarity with those suffering and called for peace and mutual respect in these areas.

Guterres shared his annual tradition of visiting Muslim communities around the world during Ramadan, where he fasts with them to reaffirm the values of Islam and remind the world of its true spirit. These visits, he noted, inspire him with a deep sense of peace and reinforce the season’s spirit.

“I stand with all those who are suffering. From Gaza and the wider region to Sudan, the Sahel, and beyond. And I join those observing Ramadan to call for peace and mutual respect,” Guterres stated.

He concluded his message by calling on people around the world to be uplifted by the values of Ramadan, encouraging them to embrace shared humanity and work together to create a more just and peaceful world. He ended with a warm “Ramadan Kareem,” extending his best wishes to all those observing the Holy Month.
