Authorities at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, Anambra State, have initiated an investigation into a confrontation involving a lecturer and a student over a social media video.
A spokesperson for the university, Njelita Louis, confirmed that the management, led by Vice-Chancellor Joseph Ikechebelu, will impose the appropriate sanctions on any party found guilty in the incident.
In the viral videos circulating online, a third-year student from the Department of History and International Studies, Goddy Precious, was seen filming a TikTok video in a corridor. As she danced for the camera, Chukwudi Okoye, a lecturer in the Department of Theatre Arts, walked past and lightly tapped her shoulder to ask her to make way.
The student, however, reacted angrily, claiming the lecturer had struck her. The situation escalated as she allegedly grabbed his shirt and pulled him in front of onlookers. She also reportedly bit him on the wrist and arm during the altercation. Despite the physical confrontation, Dr. Okoye remained calm throughout the incident, as captured in the footage.
The incident, which has sparked significant online debate, has drawn mixed reactions from social media users, with many netizens taking sides.
In a formal statement, UNIZIK management acknowledged the gravity of the incident and assured the public that the matter would be thoroughly investigated. The university emphasized its commitment to fair hearing, discipline, and upholding ethical standards.
“The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, is aware of the incident involving Dr. Chukwudi Okoye and Goddy Mbakwe Precious,” the statement read. “This incident, which has gained widespread attention on social media, is being taken very seriously by the university.”
The statement further noted that the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ikechebelu, had ordered a full, transparent, and impartial investigation into the matter, urging all parties and the public to remain calm while the facts are thoroughly examined.
UNIZIK reiterated its commitment to maintaining high moral and ethical standards within its community, underscoring that any form of misconduct, indiscipline, or unacceptable behavior would not be tolerated.
