Urhobo Leader Decries Lack of Progress in Identifying Killers of 17 Soldiers in Delta

Sunny Ahwefeada, a member of the World Council of Urhobo Professors, has expressed deep frustration over the lack of progress in identifying the perpetrators responsible for the brutal killing of 17 army personnel in Okuama, Delta State, one year ago.

Appearing as a guest on Sunrise Daily on Channels Television, Ahwefeada questioned the effectiveness of the security forces, highlighting the prolonged delay in bringing those responsible to justice.

“It is baffling that, a year later, the intelligence community has made no significant progress in tracking down the real culprits,” Ahwefeada said, visibly upset by the apparent lack of action. “This is deeply unfortunate, as identifying the perpetrators and ensuring they are brought to justice is crucial for closure. We remain hopeful that, eventually, the authorities will step up and uncover the truth.”

The tragic incident occurred on March 14, 2024, when 17 soldiers were mercilessly killed in the riverine community of Okuama, located in the Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta.

The military swiftly took control of the area in the wake of the attack, which caused widespread panic and forced many residents to flee into nearby creeks and neighboring communities for safety.

Ahwefeada also revealed that community leaders from Okuama, who were detained following the attack, continue to languish in detention months after their arrest. He lamented the death of one of the detained leaders, who tragically passed away while in military custody.

“The tragic loss of one of the community leaders in detention is a painful reminder of the need for justice,” Ahwefeada said. “We urgently call for the release of those still in detention and for an independent commission of inquiry to be established. Such an inquiry could provide the transparency and accountability necessary to bring closure to this horrific incident.”

Ahwefeada’s comments highlight the growing discontent among local communities, who continue to seek answers and justice for the fallen soldiers and the families affected by the tragedy.

The call for a fair and transparent investigation into the massacre is gaining momentum, as residents of Okuama and the broader Urhobo community await resolution.
