The Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has sought to calm concerns regarding the controversy surrounding the Visa-on-Arrival (VOA) policy. He clarified on Tuesday that the policy has not been cancelled, but rather upgraded to improve efficiency, contrary to reports suggesting its scrapping.
Tunji-Ojo made the statement following a closed-door meeting with a delegation from the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC) in Abuja. According to a statement released by PEBEC’s Director-General, Princess Zahrah, the meeting was convened to address concerns and clarify the government’s position on the VOA initiative.
Zahrah further explained that the discussions were in line with PEBEC’s ongoing efforts to simplify procedures and reduce bureaucratic hurdles, particularly to improve the business environment in Nigeria.
The Visa-on-Arrival policy had sparked mixed reactions in recent days, with some stakeholders, including investors and members of the international community, expressing concerns about its future. However, Tunji-Ojo assured that the policy had not been scrapped, but instead, it had been upgraded to streamline the process and make it more effective.
Under the new regulations, travelers seeking short-stay visas will still be able to apply online, with approvals granted within 24 to 48 hours. Once approved, the visa will be sent to the applicant’s email, eliminating the need for a physical sticker upon arrival. The process now includes real-time background checks involving Interpol, criminal record systems, and other agencies to ensure better vetting of travelers.
“The Visa-on-Arrival process is not being scrapped,” Tunji-Ojo said. “Rather, it has been upgraded to improve efficiency and effectiveness. This upgraded system will cut out inefficiencies, allowing Nigeria to better automate and control the inflow of travelers.”
The minister also noted that the changes align with the government’s broader goal of improving its business environment and attracting foreign investment, ensuring that the country remains competitive in the global market.
