The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially announced the release of the results for the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for private candidates, second series. The examination, which was held between October 25 and December 20, 2024, introduced a groundbreaking hybrid mode of assessment, combining traditional paper-and-pen exams with computer-based testing.
According to a statement issued by the Council’s Acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola F. Adesina, a total of 65,023 candidates participated in the examination across 5,067 centers nationwide. This reflects a 20% decrease in the number of candidates compared to the previous year.
WAEC reported that 95.9% of the results have been fully processed and released, enabling most candidates to access their scores without delay. In terms of performance, 53.64% of candidates achieved at least five credits, including English and Mathematics, which is a 9.35% improvement from the previous year’s results.
However, 2,577 candidates representing 3.96% of those who sat the exam—had their results withheld due to alleged involvement in examination malpractice. Affected candidates have been directed to visit the WAEC Notice of Examination Malpractice Portal to address the issues related to their results.
Further details reveal that the examination attracted 68,342 registered candidates, with 65,023 candidates sitting for the exam. Of the total candidates who sat the exam, 31,504 were male (48.45%) and 33,519 were female (51.55%). Among them, 157 candidates with special needs such as visual impairments, hearing challenges, and albinism were given the necessary accommodations during the exam.
The results also showed significant improvement in the performance of candidates. Out of the 65,023 candidates who sat for the exam, 43,923 (67.55%) obtained credits in at least five subjects, while 34,878 (53.64%) obtained credits in five subjects, including English and Mathematics. This marked a notable 9.35% increase from the performance in 2023, where only 44.29% of candidates achieved the same.
Despite this progress, 2,577 candidates had their results withheld due to allegations of malpractice. WAEC has urged these candidates to visit the official portal for further actions. All complaints will be thoroughly investigated, with results communicated to the concerned candidates following evaluations.
Candidates can check their results on the WAEC result-checking portal at www.waecdirect.org. Digital certificates are also available on the WAEC Digital Certificate Platform, and hard copies can be requested through the WAEC Certificate Request Portal at https://certrequest.waec.ng/.
WAEC expressed its gratitude to all stakeholders involved in the successful conduct of the examination, including government bodies, security agencies, examiners, and all personnel who contributed to the smooth running of the exams and the timely release of results.
