We Are In A State Of War’ — DHQ On Borno Bombings

The Defence Headquarters has declared that Nigeria is on the brink of war following the recent bombings in Borno State. This grim revelation was made in a statement by Major General Edward Buba, the Director of Defence Media Operations, on Tuesday.

He recounted the horrific events that led to significant loss of life in Gworza Local Government Area over the weekend.

Major General Buba detailed the terror attacks, describing them as a series of Person-Borne Improvised Explosive Device (PBIED) incidents, commonly known as suicide bombings, all occurring on Saturday, June 29, 2024.

The first explosion took place at approximately 3:00 PM when a female suicide bomber, disguised as a beggar, infiltrated a wedding reception on Mararaba Hausari Street and detonated her device.

A second explosion followed at about 5:00 PM, targeting those aiding the victims of the initial blast. This second attack, carried out by another female suicide bomber on the same street, caused further casualties. In response, troops swiftly imposed a curfew to secure the community and prevent additional loss of life.

Tragically, a third explosion occurred as troops enforced the curfew. This attack, also by a female suicide bomber, targeted the soldiers and hybrid forces from behind, resulting in the deaths of a soldier and two members of the hybrid forces.

A fourth potential incident was narrowly avoided when troops identified the suspect early, causing her to prematurely detonate her bomb, making her the sole casualty. In total, 20 people lost their lives, and 52 others sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment.

Major General Buba emphasized that each life lost, whether civilian or military, is a significant tragedy. He expressed condolences on behalf of the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. CG Musa, and the entire armed forces to the families of the victims and those in need of healing and recovery.

He highlighted that these attacks are a reaction to the recent military successes against the terrorists. “Our recent operations have decapitated the leadership of the terrorists, depleted their resources, reduced their support base, and diminished their influence,” Buba stated. He urged citizens to see through the terrorists’ attempts to create an illusion of strength and instill panic.

Major General Buba called for unity, vigilance, and continued support for the armed forces to secure a peaceful future. He assured that the fate of the terrorists responsible for this insecurity would be “violent and short” as troops are determined to eliminate them from the battlefield.

The Defence Headquarters remains resolute in its commitment to counterterrorism and reassures the public that the armed forces will not relent in their efforts to protect the nation.
