We’ll improve welfare of minors arraigned for #EndBadGovernance protest-Olawande
The Minister of Youth Development Ayodele Olawande, has announced that efforts are being made to enhance the welfare of minors who were arrested for their alleged involvement in the nationwide #EndBadGovernance protests. This follows troubling scenes at a federal high court in Abuja where several minors collapsed while waiting for their arraignment.
The court granted bail to these minors at a sum of N10 million each, with the prosecutor requesting the removal of the names of those who collapsed from the charges. In response to the situation, Olawande stated that his ministry is collaborating with the Ministry of Interior to gather facts about the circumstances surrounding the arrests and to improve conditions for the young individuals held in custody, not only in this specific case but across the nation’s custodial facilities.
Olawande emphasized the ministry’s commitment to safeguarding the interests and welfare of young Nigerians, ensuring their well-being regardless of their circumstances.
The #EndBadGovernance protests, which took place from August 1 to 10, were sparked by widespread economic hardship and called for significant changes, including a reduction in governance costs, the reinstatement of the petrol subsidy, food security, and fiscal discipline.
While the protests aimed to draw attention to these issues, they turned violent in some regions, leading to looting and vandalism. Following the unrest, police arrested several individuals, with initial court proceedings beginning in early September.
