The midfielder for Bayer Leverkusen, Gradit Xhaka, has given his fellow Nigerian players, Victor Boniface and Nathan Tella, credit for their contributions to the team.
Leverkusen defeated Werder Bremen 5-0 over the weekend to win the Bundesliga for the first time in their history.
In addition to scoring the first goal, Boniface also set up Xhaka for the second.
Tella was introduced in the second half of the match, therefore he was also involved against Bremen.
The goal against Bremen took Boniface’s league tally to 11, with eight assists in 18 games.
For Tella, he has five goals, two assists in 20 league appearances this season.
Speaking after the game, Xhaka told Soccernet.ng:“For Boni and Nathan, they’re very good, very positive, always with a smile on their faces.
“With them, we have a lot of quality in the team, on and off the pitch, and it’s so nice to be a part of them and the team.”
The former Arsenal captain also spoke about the support Leverkusen got from Nigerians and other parts of the world.
“It’s difficult to find the right words but I had a very good experience in Nigeria, won the U-17 World Cup there, defeating them in the final,” he said.
“Jokes aside, I say thanks for the support, it is always good to have worldwide support and we gave our best for the season.”
Xhaka and his Nigerian teammates can end the season with a treble as they are in the final of the German Cup and are on the verge of advancing into the semi-finals of the Europa League.
They have a 2-0 first leg advantage over Premier League club West Ham.
