Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has expressed that if Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State is found guilty of any impeachable offense, he should face impeachment.
Speaking in a live media chat on Wednesday, Wike stressed the critical importance of maintaining the rule of law and held accountable those close to the governor.
“Politics is serious business. If the governor has committed an impeachable offense, let the process play out. It’s not a criminal matter,” Wike stated firmly.
Wike went on to underline his commitment to due process and justice, criticizing the growing trend where a small faction of lawmakers can enact legislation that is later challenged in court. “It’s hard to believe that in our country, a handful of legislators can make decisions that affect the masses, and then expect to go to the Supreme Court over it. Do we still take our work seriously?” he remarked, casting doubt on the credibility of such actions.
He also didn’t hold back in his critique of the Rivers State High Court, calling it the “worst” in the country. In contrast, Wike applauded those who stand against injustice and called for respect for elected officials, emphasizing that leadership is not about domination.
“Speakers and members of the Assembly are not children. They are elected representatives, not subordinates. You don’t treat them like your boys or girls. In my time as governor, I formed strong, respectful relationships with my Speakers. It was never about being the master,” Wike explained.
He reflected on the painful experience of elder statesman Ferdinand Alabaraba, who had supported the rise of an Ijaw governor, only to be met with disrespect from the very person he helped. “This elder statesman nearly cried. The governor he supported turned around and insulted him. Now, that same governor can’t turn to him for help anymore. These are the people we should care for,” Wike added, sharing his thoughts on the importance of loyalty and mutual respect in political circles.
Wike’s comments serve as a strong reminder that leadership should be based on integrity, respect for the law, and accountability, regardless of political position.
