Former Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello has finally bowed to pressure and has turned himself in to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
In a statement released by Ohiare Michael, Director of the Yahaya Bello Media Office, it was announced that Bello honored the EFCC’s invitation after consulting with his family, legal team, and political allies.
The statement emphasized that the former governor respects the rule of law and has always sought to enforce his fundamental rights to ensure due process. It noted that the case has been before a competent court, where Bello has been represented by his legal team at every hearing. The former governor aims to clear his name, asserting that he has nothing to hide and nothing to fear.
Bello also expressed his support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration in promoting sustainable economic development and combating corruption. He was the first governor of Kogi State to establish an anti-corruption mechanism to ensure that state resources benefit the people.
Michael stated that Yahaya was accompanied to the EFCC Headquarters by prominent Nigerians and expressed hope that the Commission would act professionally and respect his fundamental rights.
Further details about his engagement with EFCC operatives will be provided later. This development comes after Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja adjourned proceedings in the EFCC’s alleged money laundering case against Bello to September 25.
The EFCC has charged Bello with 19 counts related to an alleged ₦80 billion money laundering scheme, which he has previously avoided by boycotting court sessions.
