The Yobe State government has granted a pardon to 30 inmates currently held in various correctional facilities across the state, following a recommendation from the State’s Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy.
Chief Information Officer at the Ministry for Justice Alhassan Sule Mamudo, confirmed the release in Damaturu. The pardon was based on the advice of the council, which is chaired by the State’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Saleh Samanja.
Before deciding on the pardons, the council conducted visits to correctional facilities in Potiskum, Nguru, and Gashu’a to evaluate the inmates’ cases and identify those who were deserving of release.
Mamudo explained that the state periodically grants pardons to inmates serving sentences for minor offenses or those who are eligible for fines, as part of efforts to alleviate overcrowding in the state’s correctional facilities.
