Zamfara State Reports 40 Deaths in Boat Accident

The Zamfara State Government has confirmed that 40 individuals have died following a boat accident in Gummi Local Government Area.

The tragedy occurred on Sunday when a boat carrying more than 40 passengers capsized in the Bakin Kasuwa River, located in the Uban Dawaki community.

The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Media and Publicity Sulaiman Idris provided details on the incident. He relayed that Governor Lawal described the accident as a “monumental disaster.”

In response to the tragedy, the governor has instructed the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to launch immediate rescue and recovery operations. “The governor has directed SEMA to recover the deceased bodies and assess the full extent of the accident,” Idris stated.

Additionally, Governor Lawal has mandated the Commissioner for Humanitarian and Relief Matters to provide urgent relief materials to the victims’ families. Idris conveyed the governor’s condolences, noting, “Governor Lawal prays for the souls of the departed, grieves with their families, and assures the public of the state government’s commitment to preventing future incidents.”

This tragic event follows a recent flood disaster in the same local government area, which destroyed over 2,000 houses and significant farmland, causing damage valued in the millions of naira.
